“Every step toward your dreams fulfills a sacred obligation.” — Pilar Gerasimo
Dreams of Writing

When I consider my life and my dreams, the only thing that consistently rings in my head and heart is to write. As I child, when I learned to play piano and guitar, I wrote songs. If I tried story-writing, I usually cloned one of my favorite books, Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Count of Monte Christo, The Moon Spinners, Dr. Doolittle, Three Blind Mice, The Boy Who Invented the Bubble Gun, A Wrinkle in Time. The story-writing never got very far – the first pages describing characters and situations that already existed!
After college, I devoted more time to story-writing, short stories and novellas. I’d start, get a dozen pages in, and leave off, the thrill of the story and the grind of the writing falling victim to insecurity and day-to-day responsibilities. My plots, I felt, were predictable, my characters flat, my writing dull and lifeless.
Finishing the Story
I should have understood how normal this is from experiences in my day job. When you get a grant or start a new education program, enthusiasm flags in the middle of the project. No one believes the BIG goals of this great idea can be accomplished. They can – if you soldier on, the “butt in chair” rule of project management and completion.
Is it a sacred obligation to listen to the dream inside you? Is it a sacred obligation to study and work hard, to persist, to take steps toward fulfilling that dream?
